Mia Fury's logo has black circles and black text, and is on a pink paint splotch. It reads "Mia Fury Dark Romance Author" and her tagline "I make words, not sense." There is a small black butterfly and a heart & dagger in the logo.
Just like Mia's tagline, "I make words, not sense," the best things in life often make the least sense of all. So dive in!

If you haven't already met this sassy queen, you're in for a treat! Mia Fury is an indie author who frolics in the Dark Romance world. Her MMCs are delightfully unhinged, and honestly, they make you question your morals and patience simultaneously.

Q1: What inspired you to start writing, and did you start with adult romance?

A: My brain is a crazy old place, and I’ve always written to some degree, previously preferring to write horror, but my first published works were a vampire series, that one day will be republished in this name after a little, pardon the pun, re-vamping lol.

Q2: Can you share a bit about your writing process? Do you have any rituals or routines?

A: I’m a pantser, so my only process really is to wake up (or my version of that), and sit down at my laptop, and see what shakes loose. Coffee helps, cake helps, and sometimes I’ll talk over ideas with my hubby to get the juices flowing (oooh that sounds dirty lol).

Q3: What role does morality, or lack thereof, play in shaping your characters' relationships?

A: My characters are generally lacking in many morals, and they’re fun to write, because you can avoid the acceptable behaviours, and let them run wild (which they frequently do to me). I do find some of them have hidden depths, but honestly, they dictate who they are, and if they’re morally grey or otherwise, that’s all on them.

Q4: What themes or messages do you hope readers take away from your work?

A: I hope that people will maybe learn that not being ‘normal’ is okay, because we’re all our own versions of that word, and my characters are as flawed as we all are, probably more so, in fact. I think I’d like them to see that emotional and mental health issues are valid and real, and shouldn’t be judged, and I hope my characters, even the a-holes, display enough consideration in those instances to really drive that message home.

Q5: Can you give us a sneak peek or a favorite excerpt from your current WIP? Perhaps clues or a mood board?

A: A mood board would suggest being organised, which I’m definitely not, but I’m always happy to share a few lines of something I’m working on, so here goes… from my upcoming dirty cop series…  “Just lean on me, man, let’s get you out of here.”

“I wouldn’t,” a voice said from the alleyway, and I lifted my head to see Marco Cardini, one of the enforcers for the Bennetts. Sh*t, way to get busted by the boss’s men, eh?

  “Hey, Marco, what’s uh… what’s going on?”

He stepped out of the darkness, his huge bulk seeming to suck more light from the street.

“What’s going on is you assisting an enemy of the Bennetts. Does that seem wise?” Jesus f*ck. Enemy of the Bennetts? I thought he just got fired.

“He’s a mess, man. I was just gonna get him home and cleaned up and on his way.”

“You’d be harbouring an enemy of your bosses, Jacko. I don’t think you want that kind of heat.” - Mia Fury

Q6: What’s one line you’ve written that perfectly captures the essence of dark romance, and why does it resonate with you?

A: Burning Depravity.

"How dare he assume that my refusal to break was something other than an obscene level of personal strength and stubbornness?"

For me, it was about him seeing her fight and resilience as a lack of soul, rather than the bitter struggle to retain it despite his cruelty. I think so much of dark romance is people showing their worst parts first, and keeping hold of what’s good, in the face of that, is the real challenge.

Q7: What has been the most surprising part of your publishing journey so far?

A: I think how hard this job is, is one takeaway, because I work probably fourteen plus hours a day, seven days a week, for far less money than I earned in a regular 9-5 type job, but at least I love what I’m doing now. The kindness of others in the industry, and the willingness to support and nurture each other on their journey, is another thing I’ve seen plenty of, and do my best to carry on with newer writers stepping up. There absolutely IS room for all of us, so we need to remember we’re not competing with each other. We’re building a multi-faceted escape room for all.

Q8: What advice would you give to readers who may be reading your work as an escape/adventure away from life?

A: Can I say ‘don’t try this at home’? Lol I mean, a lot of what I’ve written, at least aside from the PNR books, is pretty dark and twisted, but I hope the threads of love and devotion can be seen within each story. I’d say never push yourself past an emotional trigger, because there’s no need to. Be you, and read within your comfort zone, so you get maximum enjoyment from it.

I think it's safe to say that Mia is pro #selfcare for all her readers, and is a proud member of the Self Love Club.
Q9: Can you share a bit about where you’re from? Set the scene for us!

A: Wow… it’ll be my dullest (and most normal) story yet lol I’m English, born in a small town called Swindon (usually a joke in UK TV shows), and I’m a travel-phobe, so mostly stick close to home. Writing and editing were both dreams of mine as a teen, and throughout life, so I’m living them at last, and hope to keep bringing more ‘Briterature’ for you all in the future.

Q10: How do you feel your background, identity, or personal experiences have influenced your writing?

A: I’m lucky enough to have had a fairly easy life, with a simple but loving upbringing, but a few dark points or experiences have absolutely made their way into my books. Being attacked at fifteen definitely had a lasting impact on not only my psyche, but my general comfort around people and out in the world, so that finds its way into some of my characters. A few characters in my upcoming biker series definitely have some of my own issues, so that was my attempt at some form of catharsis, although nothing really makes those things go away completely.

Well, there are no words for what you've been through, but I am grateful to know your energy and to see you healing and sharing in your ways as time goes on. It's not easy, but you're worth it, and the world is so much better with you in it!

Q11: What are some of the most significant influences on your writing style?

A: I’m not sure there are any that I’m consciously aware of. I write with as much realism as I can inject into far fetched stories, but I read so much, so often, that I don’t really know if there are discernable effects on my writing.

Q12: What was the initial spark or idea that led to the creation of your Deadly Obsessions duet?

A: Honestly, I’m incredibly close with Chelle Rose, like I literally adore her, so we chat daily, and those chats have always been borderline twisted anyway, because that’s how we roll. When we both found out we were getting messaged by the same random guy, who I cut off before d*ck pics could happen, but she unfortunately didn’t, we joked about writing a story about that situation, and using it to bring him down. Once we realised neither of us were joking, we started to write, and it flowed so beautifully, and was the best writing experience of my life. Turning it into a duet was necessary because we just needed to work together again, since it was such a positive, and thrilling experience. I’m so proud of our duet, and our twisted characters.

Q13: Do you have any favorite romance tropes, themes, or clichés?

A: For some reason, I have a real thing for anything enemies to lovers related, be it forced proximity, or literally just people in each other’s lives who don’t get on. I love that angst, and the push and pull, I love being edged by their connection, until they finally can’t fight their urges. It’s the only time I enjoy edging lol

Q14: What do you think is the role of romance novels in today’s society?

A: I personally think, like anything out there to entertain, that they’re there to provide some escape from the hell that life can be for so many people, and whether they have positive messages or not, sometimes they can provide more than just that escape, be it catharsis, or even just a realisation that you’re not alone in your struggles, because we all have something we fight with, and as much as that makes us unique, it also should bring us together.

So well said, and I completely agree. Whether it's on Earth or in a fictional realm, it's nice to know you are never alone!

Q15: What are your long-term goals as a writer? These change all the time but we would love a peek into your beautiful mind.

A: I think I started out doing it, because I’d felt the creative juices flowing again after a number of years, and I enjoyed stretching my dark romance muscles. As time has passed, and I’ve found people who actually read and enjoy my books, it’s become more of a need to keep building more characters, more worlds, and more stories, because I want to share more of my crazy mind, since I’ve found people receptive to it. Yes, obviously I’d love to make it a viable career, and earn decent money from it one day, but so far, I’m proud of how many books I’ve poured my heart into, and put out there for my readers.

Q16: Do you have a favourite book or character(s) from your own works? If so, why?

A: Oh this is a tricky one, because I guess, yes, I have favourites, but they depend on my mood. If I’m feeling particularly cranky and aggressive, I’d say Gray from Burning Depravity, because he’d just burn it all down and walk away, whistling, but (and don’t tell them this) I think the Bennett brothers will always be my favourite characters, because they’re my first foray into dark romance, and I feel like they showed me a side of me I didn’t know existed. They let me let out my inner darkness, and I think that’s made me a better writer too.
